If you're like me, you’ve seen the internet ads claiming that you can get a Concealed Weapons Permit online by watching a quick video and answering a few questions. I was curious as to how this was possible, and could it really allow me to carry a firearm legally in the State of Florida?

What I found?...It's a BIG MISCONCEPTION

When you take an online course you are applying for a Virginia Non-Resident Concealed Carry permit. Virginia is one of the only States that accepts an online training course as an acceptable training method to get a concealed carry permit. The websites that offer an Online Concealed Carry training are very vague about the type of permit you will be receiving and your ability to carry your firearm across the country. I have had several customers come take our class after learning they did not qualify to carry a concealed firearm in the State of Florida with the online training they signed up for. Even worse, it’s clearly stated that the online course is NON-REFUNDABLE.

If you take an online concealed weapons class you will be applying for a Virginia Non-Resident carry permit. According to the Florida Department of Agriculture’s website, the State of Florida does not honor Virginia non-resident permits under Florida’s reciprocity provision.

See screen-shot below from the State of Florida:

As you can see Virginia is listed with two exceptions (1,5). Here's what those exceptions are:

1. While Florida's law allows licensees to carry stun guns, knives, and billy clubs in a concealed fashion, the laws in these states allow for concealed carry of handguns or pistols only, not weapons in general. Florida license holders are prohibited from carrying other types of weapons while in these states

5. These states issue concealed carry licenses to qualified individuals who are non-residents. These non-resident permits cannot be honored under Florida's reciprocity provision.

Of course, the online training sites don’t make this information easy to find or it is buried in stacks of text which no-one reads. One popular online training site says this under Florida:

Online Training’s Program will not give you the ability to concealed carry in Florida, but we recommend taking our Virginia Non Resident Carry Permit/License. The license allows Floridians to concealed carry in neighboring states as well as numerous states across the country. Register today to take our class to be eligible to apply for the Virginia Non Resident license. The Virginia non-resident permit allows you to carry in these 28 green States, and is prohibited in the red States. As you can see, the State of Florida is RED and prohibited.

The Florida Concealed Weapons Resident Permit is valid in these green States, and prohibited in the red States. As you can see, Florida’s Concealed Carry Permit is valid in 36 States compared to Virginia’s 28 States.

So, if you are serious about carrying a firearm legally in the State of Florida as a Florida resident please follow the rules laid out by the Florida Department of Agriculture, and find a reputable company who will make sure you are guided in the right direction. You can verify all of this information yourself here on the Department of Agricultures website.
